@alernest
thanks for the advice. I’ve decided to go with a 2010 honda civic coupe. They offer manual or automatic, and this is really one of the hardest decisions i’ve had to make about a car. I’m still thinking about it, but right now just because of where i live i think i’ll end up choosing automatic

@HCNguyen86 you are correct, but if you are stuck in traffic for a long time that does take a toll on your leg. Also depending on what kind of car you are driving can make it worse, I would love to see someone push in and let off of a clutch on a Cobra for an hour and tell me there leg didn’t start to get sore, trust me it’s not an easy task, and anyone that drives or has driven one will tell you the same thing. But thats not to say I wouldn’t still do it b/c I would still prefer the manual.

no problem; born and raised on a stick shift and traffic is no problem.
Anyone that actually complains about being stuck in traffic does not really know how to drive a standard transmission because it takes little to no effort to inch forward.
automatic = lift of brake
standard = ease of clutch, depending on how far you wanna go no gas is probably needed in tight traffic jams.

@jumar1281 It really depends on just how much traffic your in. If it’s stop and go for the majority of the 2hrs then its not going to be too much fun for you or your left leg. alernest nailed it with his reply, I agree. I sit in traffic every now and then and it does suck but after that traffic clears then it’s so much more fun. It also depends on the car b/c now a days with 7 and even 8 speed autos, the automatics can do even better with gas than the manuals. But in the end it’s up to you

I’ll venture some advice, even if you were not addressing me.
I think it all finally depends on what your ultimate intention and aspirations for the car are. If your priorities are to have a means of personal transport to deal with your daily needs and, specially if most of your driving is to be in city traffic and long straights on motorways, you might as well settle for an automatic.
If, instead, you plan to buy a car to extract the most instense pleasure from it, the choice is simple…

i would like your opinion. i’m a young guy, about to buy my first car. I learned to drive with an automatic, and have been driving automatic for the last 10 years. I really want a manual, but i live in chicago and drive almost 1 hour each way to work in traffic. What do you recommend for a person in my situation? Majority of my driving is in city traffic, except if i go out at night or the weekend. I hear manual transmission holds up longer in city driving, but is more hassle

Does manual accelerate faster?
Ex: if im racing my friends is manual going to give me an edge over an automatic?

I think auto, tiptronic, semi-manual or what ever you would like to call it will always be the fastest b/c humans simply can”t shift that fast. However I don’t feel you always have to go as fast as the car can possibly go. I enjoy shifting gears and being able to do it all my self. It makes me feel more in control, thats why I will continue to buy manuals. In the end it’s just a better driving experince for me.

@Federstahl I think the whole debate may end up becoming moot with the mass acceptance of powerful electric cars. They have no engine, transmission, differential, clutch, torque converter, hydraulics (except the brakes), belts, hoses or fluids.

Being able to operate a manual does not equal having skills. People buy automatics out of laziness in their daily driver and in sports cars often enough because they are not able to drive fast with a manual transmission.
Race cars are automated manuals (like Smart Softtouch, BMW SMG, Porsche PDK, VW DSG, Lamborghini eGear, Audi R-tronic etc) more and more. The future will be a good compromise between enhancing every day versatility and sportiness like VW / Porsche achieved it with DSG / PDK.

@10eleven
Haha if Auto’s are for people that can’t shift why do a huge percentage of people who own auto’s have a manual liscence..?. and manuals are for people who watch to much fast & furious and think they’re top shit because they can move a stick around while working a clutch -clap-. “oh look at me im driving a MANUAL!!! WHOA SKEELZ” hahaha

Are you kidding? autos are for people who don’t know how to shift ? Are you sure about that? F1 cars, top fuel dragsters, WRC cars and most race cars ARE NOT manual anymore… Manual gearboxes are ancient technology. Dual-clutch transmissions are the future of automotive engineering.

you saying youve beat people who swear on stick means little, as you could own a faster car outright, or you could be racing people who dont know how to bang a gear.
torque conversion is not a problem of the past. if automatics were truly faster, theyd be used a lot more diversely than on big powerful barges.

@PrisonCipher If you can’t drive it’s your problem. I don’t have to werry about gear shifting.. it comes natural.. from instinct. And this is the same to all real drivers, so you keep yout automatic transmission for yourself and don’t offend peiople just because you are frustrated

I shift and use auto’s but I bought an automatic, why?, zero problems going up and down hills, I don’t race but even so, I’ve beat people who swear on shift stick. You do know torque conversion is a problem of the past right? Technology has made any problems made with A/T non existent

autos are for people who don’t know how to shift.
argument done.
i’m not sure where you’re getting your ’statistics’ from though. whilst dsgs and other such clutch type “automatics” ARE faster, you bleed power through a torque converter.

Manuals are for the meatheaded bricks who jerk off to Roadhouse. Esepcially when statistically and A/T is faster as one doesn’t have to worry about gear shifting or catching up to the required ratio. In the end, automatic is the way to go.
